Working at Nando's

Publié le par mpeschoux.over-blog.com

I am working at Nando's Hindley street since more than three months now and as I mentioned previously, as had sufficient skills and knowledge of the business to work there as a manager.

Nando's is a global franchisee based all around the world: They have plenty of restaurants in Asia, Middle east, teh Pacific region and Africa, as well as Canada, England ...

They are well known for their flame-grilled chicken and other fast food burgers and wraps (as for Australia's ones).

As a worldwide franchisee, they adaptated their menu to preferences all over the world.

* Nando's story *

An Australian guy want to Portugal in the 1970s and tried the "portugese chicken". Back in its home country, he decided to open restaurants with partners based on portuguese dishes.

Nando's website is pretty well designed. They try to build a legend around their chicken and prove customers that their product is of high quality.

As far as I am concerned, I found some incongruities which are really weird. But as in general customers think Nando's is a mexican restaurant, it does not seem to cause a lot of problems. A lot of customers do not know as well that Portugal is a county, and where it is located. One of the biggest mistake is the ambiance music diplays in the restaurants: half of them are in spanish (from latin America), one music is an african one and for the rest in portugese language, they are brazilian, not portugese ...

Nando's concept is simple: All of the Nando's are restaurants (independants or based in food courts). Customers are served at the table. They can also choose the take away option or phone ordering.

The menu is composed of a large range of combo's:

customers have to choose between

* Flame grilled chicken (quater, half or full chicken)

* Burgers, pitas and wraps

* Portugese paellas

* chicken salads

to these dishes, they can add a side (chips, rice, couscous, coleslaw, salad, corn) and a drink to form a menu.

Customers pay an average price of A$18 for a menu.

Nando's seems really expensive for me, as just a classic burger with a small side and a small drink cost A16$.

Customers can also choose to share some platers (mixed or just with full chicken). Nando's offer also a large range of vegetarian alternatives.

The reputation of Nando's is also based on their "peri peri basting": customers have to choose different sauce that we put during the cooking from lemon and herb to extra hot.

Talking about customers, I have noticed that there is a large muslim population coming to the store as all of our chicken are accreditated Hallal. There is also a lot of Asian people, who are just ordering chicken in the grill (never burgers or wraps). I also noticed as I am cleaning tables that Chinese people especially put chicken bones on the table when they finish their dishes. A lot of Australian's are vegetarian. They are looking for alternatives. Nando's propose for this egge burgers made with vegge patties ... A kind of vegetable steack.

As far as I am concerned, I have never tried Nando's chicken breast or tenders, nor thight, ribs ... I do not eat meat as a general and I am not really in fast food restaurants. So when I am at the front, it is really difficult for me to explain to customers what taste has this particular meal or why their chicken was chewy the last time they went to the restaurant ...
